The Battle of the Somme in 1916, which lasted for over four months, would become a symbol of both immense sacrifice and controversial military strategy. It is infamous for the huge loss of British (and Commonwealth) lives. Today, over a century later, historians and archaeologists continue to unearth new insights from the battlefield, shedding fresh light on a battle that remains etched in the collective memory.

For decades, the Somme was seen as a tragic folly—a symbol of outdated tactics and blind leadership. However, modern historians take a more nuanced view.

The Somme continues to reveal its secrets. Archaeologists and historians uncover remains, artifacts, and personal items that tell the human stories behind the statistics.

The Battle of the Somme was more than just a military engagement—it was a turning point in how war was fought and remembered. Over a century later, it still stands as a sobering reminder of the cost of war and the resilience of those who endured its horrors.

The Lecturer will give an account of the main phases of the battle and how history now views the battle.
