The UK’s forthcoming exit from the UK means life will change.  Spanish taxation, retirement planning and currency management have financial implications for everyone to consider.


This multi-presenter session provides contributions from a range of professional disciplines to explore arising issues/considerations and inform future actions –  delivered by professionals with local expertise and understanding.   


Following initial scene-setting, presenters will present focused sessions to explore issues for expatriates from legal, financial and retirement planning perspectives before a final ’round-up’. 


Tax residency in Spain: This presentation will include tax residency in Spain and access to healthcare; inheritance tax in Andalucia; tax advantages of a Spanish Will; instructions to relatives; Regulation 650 – International Inheritance – as well as providing a Brexit update.  


Financial planning implications of Brexit:  This presentation considers how Brexit will affect everyone, irrespective of the final outcome, from a financial planning perspective.  Effective personal financial planning depends upon creating an effective investment, pension, tax and currency strategy – where elements work together and in context with life and family situations.  Highlights will be suggested as to how to create and manage a flexible plan, capable of addressing key Brexit challenges – along with ideas on making the most of being a resident/non-resident in Spain.


Brexit and Foreign Exchange Rates: This presentation focuses upon how Brexit could impact upon currency transfers and foreign exchange rates.  It covers what has been happening – and what’s to come.  Consideration will be given to how best to safeguard against currency fluctuations and minimize risk.




Alex Radford: Alex is a dual-qualified bilingual English Solicitor and Spanish Abogado, a Partner with My Lawyer in Spain  – Alex grew up between Spain and the UK, starting his legal career with a regional law firm in the South-West of England in 1999.  Moving back to Spain in 2003, he acts for international clients, advising them on buying and selling property, inheriting tax assets. obtaining residency and doing business in Spain. Alex is a regular speaker at A Place in the Sun Live Exhibition, providing advice on the safe and secure purchase of properties in Spain.  A member of the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain, a Trustee of the English Cemetery in Malaga and a Member of the Board of the British Benevolent Fund in Spain, Alex is well known along the Costa del Sol.


Phil Loughton: Phil is an investment and pensions expert with over thirty sex years experience in the financial services industry.  His main specialities are transferring UK pensions and creating tax efficient investment portfolios for expatriates


Des Cooney, PhD:  Des is a highly experienced financial advisor and University lecturer.  He has recently been researching the effect of Brexit on pensions and the potential impact on pensioners’ lives.


Melanie Radford: Melanie has worked in the Banking and Financial Services sector for over thirty years.  She has lived in Spain for over sixteen years and joined Currencies Direct – a currency transfer specialist provider – in 2015.  She assists clients in buying euros, sterling and other currencies.
