A SENSE OF HISTORY: THE HARMONY OF SCIENCE & RELIGION, PART 2/2
This two part lecture series begins with an exploration of the latest research surrounding how human beings learn most effectively. Techniques for knowledge acquisition and retention are explored, and cognitive biases impeding the adoption of new ways of thinking are examined.
This sets the groundwork for an introduction to Thomas Kuhn’s theory of how science progresses. Far from a linear evolution, this theory suggests that paradigm shifts in science occur when the existing paradigm can no longer provide satisfactory answers to contemporary problems, and this crisis leads to a fundamental reexamination of our underlying assumptions.
Next, an introduction is given about the concept of ‘progressive revelation’ from the Bahá’í Faith, which rationally demonstrates how all the worlds great religions are part of one evolving narrative allowing for the social and spiritual evolution of humankind, where universal moral truths are continually restated, but social teachings are changed and adapted to the historical needs of each age.
Finally, commonalities between the nature and processes of science and religion will be explored in light of the above perspectives to demonstrate their intrinsic harmony.
