LA CRUZ DE JUANAR
This is a relatively short but challenging walk to the summit of la Cruz de Juanar (1.070 m) with fabulous far-reaching views on a clear day.
Leaving from the unmade road beyond El Refugio, the walk follows the wide path leading to the Mirador de Juanar that overlooks Marbella. Shortly before reaching the mirador the path turns right and makes a steep ascent along a zig-zagging path up to La Cruz de Juanar. The last part of this climb is particularly steep with loose stones underfoot in places. Hikers will need to be sure-footed and have a good head for heights. Walking poles are recommended for this section.
All of the effort spent climbing is well worthwhile as the views from the summit are spectacular on a clear day. The group will pause here for 15 minutes for lunch.
The descent on the western side of La Cruz de Juanar is steep and testing initially but gradually becomes easier, culminating in a pleasant and shady walk through the pine forest back to the cars.
There are frequently large numbers of processionary caterpillars in the pine forests around Juanar so, in the interests of safety, dogs are not allowed on this walk.
