La Torrecilla (1,919 metres) which lies south-east of Ronda is the highest peak in the Sierra de Las Nieves national park.

From the starting point the route climbs through a wooded valley before emerging onto an open and often windswept plateau.  La Torrecilla can be seen in the distance but it takes several more hours to reach it along an undulating path.  Several points of interest are passed along the way before a final steep scramble up to the summit.  We then return to the starting point along the same route.

This is the longest and most demanding walk in the U3A calendar. It should not be attempted unless you can walk solidly for 6 hours. Proper walking shoes or boots are essential and walking poles are recommended. Though not technically difficult, you MUST be FIT and have EXCELLENT STAMINA to attempt this walk. You should also bring clothing suitable for exposed mountains and cold, wet weather. Wear a number of layers. You will need to bring plenty of food and water as you will be out all day without access to provisions. There is rarely a mobile phone signal in the area so access to emergency services may also be difficult. In the interests of safety no dogs are allowed on this walk.

In short: 700 metres ascent; 15 km distance; 6 hours walking plus 2 hours travel time.

Directions to the Meeting Place:

The meeting place is in front of Aranda Iluminacion in San Pedro. This is a large lighting shop which is on the right when travelling from San Pedro to Ronda on the A397. From the A7 at San Pedro turn north onto the A397 and continue immediately over the first roundabout as if driving to Ronda. There is a second roundabout with signs to the ITV testing and with car showrooms nearby. The shop can be found on the right at the third roundabout on a slip road. This is the roundabout just before the slip road to the Toll Road. If coming off the Toll Road it is at the first roundabout travelling towards San Pedro.  We will car share from this point.

From the meeting point there is a long drive towards Ronda; turn off right after about 33km (shortly after the 14 km sign) into Parque Natural Sierra de Las Nieves. Then follow the unpaved road to Cortijo de Quejigales where the cars are parked.  Toilets are normally available at the parking area.
