SLAVERY: ITS PAST AND PRESENT

The presenter, Chris Beckett, has studied slavery through out it’s many manifestations in world history. From Rome, through Russia, the Middle East and the dramatic explosion of the 17th – 19th Centuries. From Africa and it’s infamous Goree Island, to India, China, America, South America and everywhere in between slavery has influenced the world. 

The role of slavery in the development of the modern world will be discussed. Also the effect on both slaves, slave owners and society.  The abolition movement of the early 19th Century, it’s positives and negatives.  Slavery was not just a Western experience: the East had its share as well. Chris will also look at modern slavery: “yes, it is still with us”.
