LA MAIRENA

This walk takes in La Mairena (400 metres above sea level) and the surrounding countryside with spectacular views in all directions. It begins and ends on paved roads with a mountain track between. There are beautiful views of the coast, countryside and mountains and some very interesting houses.

From La Mairena the route leads down into a valley and through the countryside until reaching a mountain track which connects Ojén wtih La Mairena.  (The Mayor of Ojén and his entourage use it on motorcycles to visit to view “their outpost of” La Mairena). The return journey on the track passes the house and estate of Julia Iglesias after which the coastline towards Gibraltar becomes visible and, on a clear day, the coast of Africa. A little later, the coast beyond Malaga can be seen in the other direction.

  DIRECTIONS

Travel in either direction along the A7 and leave at Elviria. At the first roundabout on the north side of the road take the Avenida de Espana. Continue straight over the next roundabout up the hill signposted La Mairena to pass over the motorway. After approximately 2 kilometres, by a billboard, take the first turning right signposted El Soto.   One kilometre or so later, take the first exit right at a small roundabout going up the hill towards El Soto de Marbella clubhouse/restaurant. Then, in about 400 metres, bear left and travel down the hill to the clubhouse on the right-hand side to the parking. The Clubhouse is currently closed.
