Having access to any green space can enhance people’s lives in many ways.

There are many scientific studies that demonstrate that spending time outside with exposure to nature is linked to a host of benefits, including improved attention span, lower stress, better moods and a general improvement in  well-being.

Simply looking at trees and plants, hearing birdsong, feeling the sunshine and breeze, breathing in fresh air and smelling flowers can reduce blood pressure and stress related hormones like cortisol & adrenaline.

Gardens provide a perfect opportunity to create our own restorative sanctuary, even if a garden is tiny and located in a noisy urban environment.

Gardens provide psychological, social, physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits to humans. A large part of this is because of the positive reactions humans have to nature, so it is important for all gardens to have lots of green vegetation, flowers, water elements, insects and wildlife.

Mhairi Clutson’s aim is to design gardens that are restorative and healing, whilst being sustainable and beautiful and she and her husband look forward to sharing their process with U3A International.
