SUPERVOLCANOES

One fateful day in the past, a massive volcanic explosion equivalent to hundreds of thousands of Hiroshima bombs, and the likes of which man has never come close to witnessing, tore Yellowstone apart. Many believe that another is now due. Last month, the BBC science website posited that “with an eruption brewing, NASA’s ambitious plan to save the Earth from a supervolcano, may be the only way to prevent the extinction of the human race”.  This presentation will explore the following questions: “What are these ‘supervolcanic’ beasts anyway; where are they; when were they; and what are the chances of another one anytime soon – and with what consequences ?
