The two presentations are an overview of 3000 years of Egyptian architecture from 3200 BC with the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under King Narmer until Egypt became a Roman province.   There will be a discussion to help clarify the timeline and historical events from the Old, Middle and New kingdoms and the correlation of the building  enterprises of the Pharaohs.

Part One – The Old Kingdom

In about 3150 BC a great king of Upper Egypt, Narmer, conquered the north. Egypt was thus unified in a huge state, continuing up the river as far as the geographical area of Abu Simbel. There will be an analysis of how early funerary monuments called Mastabas developed into Pyramid building. Memphis, whose building was begun during the lifetime of Narmer was the capital of the Old Kingdom 2613-2181 B.C. This lecture will focus on the period of the Old Kingdom where most of the Pyramids where built.
